Description

A rare hand-made, hand-painted owl sculpture featuring a bold black and white design. About 3¼ inches tall.

We’re thrilled to offer several works by Ricardo Nowinski (1962- ), a highly regarded sculptor and ceramicist from Uruguay. Nowinski has exhibited throughout Uruguay. These pieces are early works (1980s-1990s). He currently does monumental abstract sculptures featuring figures and abstracted architectural forms.

Ricardo trained under his father Jaime Nowinski (1934- ) who was part of the Uruguayan post-war modernist movement spearheaded by Joaquín Torres García and Miguel Ángel Pareja. Our gallery has sold other Mid-Century works from Uruguay including a rare vase by López Lomba and an abstract painting by Nelson Ramos. Garcia was influenced by Picasso — these artists traveled frequently to Europe during the 1950s.

Ricardo is represented by Juan Palleiro Art Gallery in Uruguay. I’ve seen other Nowinski sculptures at a Mid-Century gallery in Jose Ignacio.

It’s worth noting that the Uruguay government vehemently protects their indigenous original art and artifacts. Removing them from the country is difficult and there is almost no exporting. Therefore these items are quite rare in the U.S.
