Description

Quite extraordinary. 1960 LP cover design by the legendary modernist Josef Albers created to accompany “Provocative Percussion Vol. 2” — part of a large series of specialty recordings. This original vinyl LP cover is float framed in matte black wood with an 8-ply acid-free mat and gallery acrylic. 18¼ inches square. We’ve included the actual vinyl disk with this framed original album cover. It’s in a sleeve affixed to the back of the frame. If you have a turntable, give it a spin.

It’s worth noting that the condition of the cover is very fine. There are a few blemishes, but considering this was a well used cardboard sleeve rescued from a dusty record bin where it had been sitting for 62 years, it is pristine.

The musicians are Enoch Light and the Light Brigade. 12 tracks include “What Is This Thing Called Love,” “Lady Is a Tramp,” “Mack the Knife,” and Foggy Day Cha Cha (!).” The liner notes stress the technical aspect of the recording’s fidelity. Published by Command Records.

On the back: “Cover art by JOSEF ALBERS, one of America’s foremost contemporary painters, was born in Westphalia Germany in 1888. … he taught at the famous Bauhaus school … Black Mountain College … Director of the Department of Design at Yale University…. lives and works in New Haven CT.” Remarkably modest considering he was the first artist to have a solo show at the MoMA and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

These Albers LP covers look great grouped together as indicated in the last photo.
