22-296 Joan Miró 1955 Exhibition Poster

$750.00

Offered here is a vintage 1955 poster promoting an exhibit of paintings by Joan Miró (1893-1983). This is a 1955 version of the poster the fine art lithographer Mourlot Freres printed for Galerie Maeght’s 1948 exhibit of the Spanish artist’s work. It’s now in the collection of the MoMA in New York, item number 76.1949.

Note: this is the original poster, not a contemporary reproduction. Some age toning and signs of handling. It is inscribed in the plate “Miro / Paris 12/4/55.” It is framed in 8-ply museum board and framed in matte black wood.

The Parisian printer Mourlot was the lithographer used by many of the Mid-Century artists including Picasso, Matisse, and Leger. Galerie Maeght in Paris was the most important showcase for these European post-war artists. Miró was an expert printmaker himself — in 1954 he was given the Venice Biennale print making prize.
