Water Tapestry II

Inspired by classical art, ancient history and contemporary ideas, Robert Moore’s photographic works are assembled of modern as well as old materials and processes. His carefully constructed images are printed on unique papers that are exquisitely framed. The finished pieces are startling in their physicality and emotional depth.

Water Tapestry ll,  part of Moore’s The Koi’s Dream series, is inspired by the woven patterns of classical European tapestries as well as the paintings from Japan’s Edo period (1603-1867). The Japanese artists particularly celebrated nature’s beauty and harmony through their work, and found inspiration through personal observation as well as the poetry of Japan, China, and Korea. Moore found his inspiration by photographing the small waves at water’s edge for countless hours: this motivated him to write his own poetry—which served as verbal sketches for his visual compositions. Moore’s koi fish work is assembled and layered from many collected photographic images and is intended to pay homage to these past artists.

Moore is a classically-trained photographer who divides his time between Manhattan and his studio in Hampton Bays. A Long Island native, he is deeply connected to the local land and shoreline, and chooses to work exclusively in these surroundings. Moore has shown his work in East End galleries, and has an upcoming solo show in Manhattan in the Spring of 2019. But he’s primarily interested in partnering with the medical community to promote the restorative power of art to help overcome difficult illness. Most notably, Moore has contributed numerous pieces of his work to Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center’s permanent art collection in Manhattan, where a large-scale version of Water Tapestry ll hangs.
