Description

The book that this image appeared in was printed in 1896, one year after Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen invented the x-ray. He called it the x-ray because the process was not understood completely. “X” in math is the placeholder for the unknown. In the book, elegantly named Versuche über Photographie mittelst der Röntgen’schen Strahlen, the photographers Josef Maria Eder and Eduard Valenta reproduced images from Roentgen’s magical machine. They imaged their own feet, hands, a lizard, some cameos, and, of course, some fish! In this case, the x-rayed a grey-head surgeonfish.

This print is an archival pigment print on 100% rag paper in an acid-free mat with a thick black custom-fitted wood frame. It is a detail of one page from the book and printed in the inverse to emphasize the detail and uniqueness of the imaging technique. Amazing detail is preserved. Overall framed dimension is 16 x 24 inches.
