Description

Vernacular Cottages

Offered here is a photo-illustration of the vernacular shingle cottages seen here in Greenport NY. These are the small, modest homes clad in weathered cedar shingles or painted clapboard, with white painted trim. They feature a roof angle that faces the street, also originally done in cedar shingle. The second story of these homes is most often low. If you stand in those rooms your head hits the ceiling and the small horizontal windows that face the street are at belt buckle height. Hence the name “belly windows.”

We like the simple lines and the minimal decoration reminiscent of Shaker design and the New England fishing village architecture seen as far north as Nova Scotia.

Greenport Village

This group of seven homes are all in Greenport Village on the North Fork of Long Island New York. Several of them are walking distance from our shop. This original artwork is very wide at 41 × 12 inches, framed in a slightly textured matte gold wood frame with a gallery quality acrylic face to minimize the weight. Other sizes and configurations available. Send us an email with size and frame color request, or if you are curious how it would appear with only 5 cottages, for example.
