Description
An impressionist original painting by Hubert Henri de Vries, 1899-1979, a Belgian. It measures 17 × 15 inches as framed. Signed on the front lower left. No date, but purchased with a group of paintings dated 1968. Thick impressionistic brushwork in oil on linen that has been cut off of the original stretcher for some reason. The condition is excellent with no loose paint or missing paint. There are several very fine cracks near the edges. The hardwood frame is intentionally distressed and shows some wear along the edges. We opened the frame, cleaned it, cleaned the painting, and re-assembled it with sturdy hardware.
De Vries studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp and was taught by Isidore Opsomer and Julian Creytens. His work was influenced by Gust de Smet, Constant Permeke and Jacob Smits. He won the International Painting Prize of Monaco in 1962. De Vries worked in Sint-Gillis Dendermonde (1943-1948) and then Antwerp. Became member of the Centro di Studi a Scambi Internazzionali in 1963. His work is included in the collection of the late King Baudouin, the collection of the current King Albert of Belgium, and the Museum of the University of Jerusalem.
