Spectacular confident brushwork and subdued color palette makes this original gouache and pencil painting very compelling. It is by Gerald Vivian Davis (American, 1899-1987). It depicts lower Manhattan as seen from the Brooklyn Heights Promenade in 1967. Signed and dated. It’s in the original gold leaf frame that is worn but presents extremely well. We removed the backing and added new hanging hardware. 42 x 30 inches.

Davis studied at Ecole des Beaux-Arts and the Academié Julian in Paris. He exhibited in Paris, Kansas (where he taught architecture briefly) and New Hope, PA. He has an entry in the volume “New Hope for American Art: A Comprehensive Showing of Important 20th Century Paintings from and Surrounding the New Hope Art Colony.”
