Description
Morris Rosenfeld was the best yachting photographer of the 20th Century. He captured artistic images that convey the real feeling of large vessel sailing. His son Stanley published a survey of his work in 1958 entitled “The Story of American Yachting Told in Pictures.” It was brought to my attention by Anders Langendal, a local boat builder. Offered here is a bookplate from the original volume. It is in a vintage hardwood frame that measures 14 ×18 inches.
The caption for this photo reads as follows: “The masthead men of old, gaff-rigged big sloops and schooners—the steeplejacks of yacht racing—had plenty to do aloft, keeping the gear in shape and the sails setting right. The coming of the jib-headed rig, with no topsails, spelled the end of their permanent stations aloft. Resolute was the last of the America’s Cup defenders that carried regular mastheaders while racing, in 1920.”
