22-113 Bloomfield 1842 Whale Sighting Logbook Poster

$595.00

Thomas R. Bloomfield, a mate on the Whaling ship “Indian Chief,” kept a visual record of whale sightings during his two-year (1842-1844) voyage. He sailed from New London CT and traveled to the Indian Ocean, The South Pacific Ocean, and the Atlantic Ocean. His pointillist drawings of whales, both right whales and sperm whales were perhaps a way to pass the time, as well as a fine visual record of the business at hand—whale meat, and oil for New England residents back home. Greenport, where our gallery is located, is a former whaling port. New London is a short ferry ride from our shop. The original logbook is in the collection of the Nantucket Historical Association.

Offered here is a reproduction on acid-free art paper in a black wood frame with a grainy texture and gallery acrylic glazing. We enlarged the image (the original is very small) so that when displayed in the modern home the detail of these amazing drawings would be seen clearly. The framed size is 21 × 31 inches.
