Description

Offered here is a vintage print circa 1960s of a drawing by the French Impressionist Edgar Degas (1834-1917). This offset reproduction after the original is marked on the bottom “DR 532 Degas. Standing Dancer with Upraised Arms. Penn Prints, New York. Printed in France.” High quality prints like this were sold at museum gift shops and poster galleries. We framed it in 8-ply acid-free museum board in a matte silver custom wood frame. The framed size is 19 x 22 inches.

This drawing is sometimes called “Danseuse, les mains derrière la tête.”

The original was done c.1876-77 with oil thinned with turpentine on prepared green paper. This study was selected by Degas for a book of engravings “Degas Danse Dessin, Paul Valéry, 1936.” Color plates were by Maurice Potin after Edgar Degas.

From the British Museum “Raised in a cultured household, Degas was a habitué of the Paris Opéra virtually his entire adult life. In his day, ballet was incorporated into most operas. As with his depictions of bathers, he sought out the unguarded moment: the dancer performing routine exercises or tying her shoe or scratching her back.”
