Original vintage silkscreen print “Homage to the Square,” by Josef Albers. 9½×9½ inch image, 24×30 inches as framed in gold leaf hardwood with 8-ply mat and acrylic glazing. We don’t often see a fine silkscreen print like this. The ink is rich and dense. Very good quality. Two very minor scuffs to the surface. A bit of age toning along the edges.

Josef Albers (1888–1976) was an influential teacher, writer, painter, and color theorist—now best known for the “Homage to the Square” series he painted between 1950 and 1976. He taught at the Bauhaus in Germany until it closed in 1933. He moved to the U.S. to teach at Black Mountain College in North Carolina until 1949. From 1950 to 1958, Josef Albers was chairman of the Department of Design at the Yale University School of Art in New Haven, Connecticut. In 1971, he was the first living artist ever to be honored with a solo retrospective at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. His paintings are in museums and private collections worldwide.
