23-355 DC NY State Council on the Arts 1973 Poster 40×60

We were surprised how large this poster was when it arrived. The paper measures 40×60 inches, and once framed it will be even bigger. It is an original vintage 1973 silkscreen print by David Diao. The artwork is typical of his early 1970s work consisting of overlapping color applied to a surface with a squeegee. He taught at Cooper Union around the time I attended there. It has bold sans serif condensed typography at the bottom: “New York State Award 1973 / New York State Council on the Arts.” There’s a small caption: “David Diao List Art Poster ©1973 HKL Ltd.”

Diao’s first exhibition was at the Paula Cooper Gallery in 1969. His work is in the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York. This poster is in the permanent collection of the Cooper Hewitt (Object ID 18504959).
