25-137 American School Original 1965 AbEx Painting 51 x 36

A gallery favorite: an original American School AbEx painting on canvas signed (?) and dated 1965. It depicts an abstract expressionist version of a day at the beach: note the Montauk lighthouse upper left, the rising and setting sun, the water’s edge, the beach umbrella lower right. “The Sun” is the logo from a defunct NY newspaper. We could use help deciphering the signature. 51 x 36 inches.

The style is very similar to Robert Rauschenberg. Other influences are Joan Mitchell, Robert Motherwell, Sam Francis, Willem de Kooning, Roy Lichtenstein, and Larry Rivers. It’s interesting to note that most of these artists visited or lived in the Hamptons or Montauk. Perhaps a friend or student of one of these iconic artists?
