Description

A finely made woodcut depicting monolithic blocks as stage set, lit from above stage right. 5 x 7 inches. Archival pigment print matted and framed in black wood. Edward Gordon Craig (British, 1872-1966) was an important actor, designer, director, and theoretician of the early 20th century European stage. As early as 1893 Craig had begun to experiment with music and woodcuts retaining only dominant forms and masses. He believed that art was not an imitation of life but rather an expression of the inexpressible. One of his most famous projects was a co-production with Stanislavsky (perhaps the most influential theater director/actor of the 20th century) of Hamlet. This production, was known primarily for its revolutionary setting of large moving panels. This woodcut simply entitled “Design for Stage Scene, 1907” was perhaps a design meant for Stanislavsky’s Hamlet in 1912.

Offered here is an archival pigment print double matted and framed in black wood.
