James Lesesne Wells (1902–1993) trained at Columbia University and has works in the collections of the Smithsonian, the Corcoran, the Brooklyn Museum, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the National Gallery of Art, and Howard University where he spent his career. Titled Provincetown Street, this image is undated. A quiet street scene captured in amazing detail. Most likely done in 1939 or 1940. Commissioned as part of the Works Progress Administration (WPA), the US government’s effort to employ artists. 8 × 10 image. Archival pigment print matted and framed in black wood.
