Description
By Leah Peeks, 2018. Wax, acrylic, resin and gesso on wood. 10 x 20 inches. This painting uses a rarely seen layered wax technique, not the more common encaustic wax that uses pigmented resin. Acrylic paint and clear wax resin are laboriously applied in many consecutive layers to create a deep, luminous image with carved and scraped textures and grid lines. Peeks drew inspiration from the Washington D.C. Color School painters of the 1950s, especially Sam Gilliam, while she was living in Virginia.
