Description

Offered here is an original page from the French art and literary revue Verve. It was published in 1938, the second issue. The artist is André Masson (1896-1987). Verve was a rare publication featuring mid-century modern art and essays. The editor Tériade commissioned original art created expressly for his visionary pages. They were extremely well printed, with each color plate “tipped in” — a printing technique allowing different lithographic methods to be used for each artwork. Often the artist would supervise the printing at Verve’s lithography studio.

This issue featured a cover by Braque, photographs by Cartier-Bresson, and an essay by Hemingway. The pages by Masson included this work, “The Sun” and a second work “The Moon.” The lithograph is 10¼ × 14 inches. On the back is a companion typographic title page with iconic drawings.

To highlight both sides of this lithograph, we framed it between two sheets of gallery glass so you can see both sides of the page in their entirety. Framed in modern edged medium gray wood. Note: this is not a reproduction—it is the original 1938 page printed in Paris under the supervision of Masson. His signature is in the plate.
