Description
Dorade in the Newport, RI to Plymouth, England, 1931 Trans-Atlantic Race: Morris Rosenfeld was the preeminent yachting photographer of the 20th Century. He captured artistic images that convey the real feeling of large vessel sailing. His son Stanley published a survey of his work in 1958 entitled “The Story of American Yachting Told in Pictures.” It was brought to my attention by Anders Langendal, a local boat builder.
Offered here is a bookplate from the original volume. It is in a vintage hardwood frame that measures 12 x 16 inches.
The caption: “Dorade, something brand-new in ocean racers in those days, scored an outstanding victory in the 1931 race to England. Compared with the typical ocean racers of her day, she was deep and narriow of hull, showing influence of her International Rule racing type, and her all-inboard yawl rig contrasted with the then popular schooners. Designed, owned, and in this race commanded by Olin J. Stephens, Dorade is generally regarded as the forerunner of the ocean-racing type of yacht that supplanted the semi-fisherman schooner type.”
