Meet Michael Aron: Art, Design, and Community in Greenport

For Michael Aron, art isn’t just a career; it’s a family tradition, a lifelong passion, and a way of life. Michael’s artistic journey began with a strong family influence. His gallery, aptly named Ray, pays homage to his uncle, an award-winning graphic designer who worked with the legendary Herb Lubalin, one of the most renowned figures in graphic design. This family connection opened doors for Michael’s own entry into the world of design, and it set the stage for a flourishing career.

Creativity seemed to be in Michael’s DNA. His father, a graphic designer, turned his artistic pursuits into a second career by opening a retail shop. Today, Michael proudly features some of his father’s artwork at Ray. His mother, an art teacher, further instilled a deep appreciation for creativity. Michael even displays pieces created by her grade school students in his gallery, creating a beautiful intergenerational tribute to art and design.

Artistic Education

Michael’s formal training reflects a deep commitment to his craft. He studied art and design at the Wooster School in Ridgefield, Connecticut, before continuing his education at the Academy of Fine Art and Design in Genk, Belgium, and Syracuse University. Ultimately, he earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the prestigious Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in New York City. These experiences helped Michael cultivate his unique perspective and prepared him for a standout career.

Over the years, Michael’s career has been marked by remarkable achievements. He began his professional journey at renowned firms such as Pushpin Associates and Herb Lubalin Associates, where he worked alongside some of the brightest minds in the industry. Later, he co-owned Calfo Aron Inc., a prominent graphic design firm in New York City that further solidified his reputation as a creative leader.

Perhaps his most notable corporate role was as the Global Corporate Design Director for the Estée Lauder Companies. In this position, Michael oversaw design initiatives for one of the world’s leading beauty brands, showcasing his ability to blend creativity with strategy on a global scale.

In 2017, Michael made a pivotal decision to leave the corporate world and channel his talents into something more personal. He founded Ray New York, a gallery and design shop that reflects his artistic expertise and passion for mid-century modern design. Located in the heart of Greenport, the gallery specializes in vintage decor, original prints, and modern objects for the home. Every item in the shop tells a story, curated with an eye for detail and a love for design.

Ray New York’s name not only honors Michael’s uncle but also embodies his vision of preserving and celebrating artistic history. Many of the items for sale are sourced from Michael’s personal collection, which he’s been curating since the 1980s. With thousands of unique pieces sold and new items added each year, Ray has become a destination for design enthusiasts seeking something truly special.

For Michael, Greenport is more than just the location of his gallery – it’s a community that inspires him daily. Nestled on the North Fork of Long Island, Greenport is a historic whaling and fishing port known for its vibrant arts scene, charming small-town vibe, and close-knit community.

Michael’s neighborhood, West Dublin, is a blend of historic homes and modern life, where neighbors know each other by name and gather for social events. “Since our neighborhood has many small historic homes set close together, it’s only natural that everyone knows everyone,” he explains. Summer evenings often see residents meeting at the local beach for cocktails and a swim, fostering a true sense of camaraderie.

Michael’s dedication to art extends beyond his gallery. He actively participates in local events aimed at promoting Greenport as a retail and tourist destination. Working with other shop owners and the local Business Improvement District, he helps to organize initiatives that bring vibrancy and economic vitality to the area.

In addition, Michael offers free art lessons to young children during the summer months. Through these classes, he not only nurtures the next generation of artists but also strengthens the community’s connection to creativity. This spirit of giving back aligns with his family’s artistic legacy and reinforces the gallery’s role as a cornerstone of Greenport’s cultural scene.

Michael’s passion for art and design isn’t limited to his professional endeavors. He’s an avid traveler, always on the lookout for vintage art and unique objects to bring back to Ray New York. One of his favorite trips was to Uruguay, where he discovered extraordinary pieces that now grace the gallery’s shelves. These adventures reflect his belief in the importance of preserving and sharing art from around the world.

A Creative Legacy

Through Ray New York, Michael Aron has built more than just a gallery – he’s created a space that celebrates art, design, and community. By blending his family’s creative heritage, his own impressive career, and his love for the North Fork, Michael has turned his passion into a business that inspires locals and visitors alike.

As Greenport continues to thrive as a hub for art and culture, Michael Aron’s story stands as a testament to the enduring power of creativity, family, and community. Whether through the gallery’s carefully curated collections or his efforts to foster local connections, Michael’s impact on the North Fork is unmistakable.
